A Drink A Day Can Keep Dementia Away!

Wine

Recently a study was conducted by scientists from the Department of Geriatrics at the University of Bari in Italy that may provide hope for those at risk of dementia. Since moderate alcohol consumption is linked to improved circulation, the researchers decided to test if drinking may also be associated with the rate of decline of mental health. Almost 1500 people participated in the four year long study.

It concluded that a drink or two per day may slow down the development of dementia. "The mechanism responsible... isn't known," said study coauthor Dr. Vincenzo Solfrizzi, a researcher of geriatrics at the University of Bari. "It is possible that the arrangement of blood vessels in the brain may play a role in why alcohol consumption appears to protect against dementia. This would support other observations that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol may protect the brain from stroke and vascular dementia."

Dementia is a condition in which one's cognitive abilities decline at a progressive rate. Dementia usually affects persons over the age of 60 and is first seen as forgetfulness. Mild dementia has developed when short-term memory is impaired, as is language function, especially word finding.

More than 6.8 million Americans have been diagnosed with dementia. There is no known cure at this time, nor is there any clear way to predict who will develop dementia.

So let's TOAST to better health and finding a cure for this disease in the future.
